GEOLOGY fans flocked to Lyme Regis to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the town's fossil festival.

Thousands of people enjoyed hand-on attractions as well as organised walks and talks at the Lyme Regis Fossil Festival.

Organisers are pleased with the success of the event, and received good feedback after moving from the usual beach marquee to venues across the town.

Heather Prior, co-ordinator of Lyme Regis Fossil Festival, said: "It all went went very well.

"We had lots of people there. One of our partners counted 10,000 people going through their stand. The weather was lovely on Saturday and there were lots of people around.

"The multi-venue set-up worked very well. We are very pleased with their feedback we have had from people and the messages we have had which have all been very positive.

"The Iggy the Iguanadon street performance was fantastic - people seemed to really love that. We also had Darwin and Mary Anning who had kids spellbound by their story. They were fantastic."

All of the festival's guided walks sold out, while all talks were well attended.

New exhibitors this year included the British Antarctic Survey which pitched up a tent on the seafront which would have been used by explorers.

The Mathouse hosted the British Geological Survey, which boasted a map showing what is underneath the ground - while the fossil fairs were also popular.

Ms Prior praised volunteers for their work and urged any helpers who wanted to take part next year, to come forward.

She added: "We could maybe have done with a few more volunteers to help out over the weekend.

"Anybody who enjoyed the event who would be interested in helping next year can get in touch."
