A LYME Regis student has become the youngest vocalist in the country to obtain grade 8 at singing.

Rory Ryan,12, has just finished year 7 at the Woodroffe School. He plays piano and drums, and has been singing since he was four years old.

Rory has been taught and coached by professional singer and teacher Sarah Ryan. Rory regularly performs his original songs in local venues with his parents, who are both musicians.

The musician is the youngest person to achieve the Rockschool qualification.

Joanna Taman, head of exams at Rockschools, said: "At Rockschool we enjoy celebrating the success stories of young musicians.

"Our exams are challenging and have recommended age brackets for each level I was really surprised, therefore, to hear about Rory, who has passed grade 8 with merit at only 12 years old.

"We usually say that level 3 exams are to be done at the recommended age of 16 plus. To pass at this level at only 12 is quite an achievement.

"Well done to Rory. We hope to see you for your performance diploma in a few years' time."

Rory is passionate about pursuing a career in music and has nearly completed his first self-penned album.
