VOLUNTEERS at a Bridport charity shop are urging people to get behind a stock appeal this summer.

Disability charity Scope have launched the Great Donate appeal, an annual drive to get one million items donated across the country by September.

Funds raised by the appeal will support Scope's work with disabled children, adults and their families.

The East Street store held a fun day on Friday (24), with volunteer George Pas providing his disabled-friendly bright orange car - in order to grab people's attention.

George was injured in a motorcycle crash four years ago, and now uses a wheelchair.

"I've had the car since February, but I had to wait for the hand controls to come through from Canada before I could drive it," he said.

"It is an automatic and it has hand controls for braking and accelerating.

"It was a no-brainer to be able to come and help out with this. I love any excuse to drive it."

As well as dressing up in fancy dress, volunteers sold cakes to raise money for the charity.

Store manage Nicole Hooper, said: "Money raised by our shops support thousands of disabled people and their families.

"We need your support to continue this vital work - so please drop off the things you no longer need at your local Scope shop.

"Everybody has come together and done a fantastic job. A professional cake-maker has kindly donated cupcakes for us to sell too."

"We do this campaign every summer so that we have enough stock to last us through the winter. We are desperate in this shop for volunteers."

The Bridport store is under new management, with Nicole taking over as manager five weeks ago. Dianne Shatford-Butcher is helping out while assistant manager Sonia Hallett is on maternity leave.

The staff have also paid tribute to two long-serving volunteers.

John Green was given a £50 voucher and a crystal rose bowl for 20 years of service in aid of the charity, while Josephine Kennedy was awarded for five years of volunteering.

John, who turns 90 this year, said: "It has been great fun to volunteer here.

"It has changed here more than once during my time.

"Volunteering is a good way of getting out and seeing people. We also get some very interesting people in the shop."
