YOUNGSTERS can take part in a beach school sessions during the summer holidays in Burton Bradstock.

The Jurassic Coast Trust has teamed up with Dorset Forest School to offer range of sessions for children aged between five and 12.

The three-hour sessions will take place at Hive Beach next month, as well as other events at Exmouth and Ringstead Bay.

The programme aims to encourage children to develop a thoughtful understanding of their roles as 'guardians' of the World Heritage Site, and the events are being funded by the Jurassic Coast Trust.

Alexandra O’Dwyer from The Jurassic Coast Trust, said: “We believe that the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site is best looked after by the people who use it and who love it - and children are our very brightest hope when it comes to looking after our coast.

"We are thrilled to be working with Dorset Forest School to combine the very best of their outdoor learning expertise with the particularly exciting and educational environment of the Jurassic Coast.”

She added: "This year is an initial trial of the sessions, to see what works and what the demand is.

"Early indications are that the sessions will prove very popular indeed so we are already thinking ahead to a much wider programme next year and will be interested in talking to funders or local businesses who can help us to widen the reach of the programme so that more children are able to enjoy these wonderful outdoor experiences.”

During the sessions, children could learn about the creatures and plants that inhabit the shoreline, how to light a fire and build a shelter, play games to learn about the gravitational pull of the moon on tides and coastal erosion, try scientific tests or go on a treasure trail.

Beach school leader, Nicole Woods, from the Dorset Forest School, said: "The team are thrilled to bring the ethos of forest school to the Jurassic Coast this summer.

"This unique coastline is simply an extraordinary learning resource for us to share with our youngsters. We have been busy planning our seaside adventures and cannot wait to see how the children will respond."

The sessions take place at Hive Beach, Burton Bradstock on Tuesday, August 11 and Tuesday, August 18, between 11am and 2pm. Sessions take place at Ringstead on Tuesday, July 21 and Tuesday, July 28 and at Sandy Bay, Exmouth on Wednesday, August 5 and Wednesday, August 26.
