WALKERS donned purple to march in memory of a popular Bridport mum - raising money for a school and a charity.

More than 170 people take part in the Rebecca Harris Memorial Walk on Sunday (14) - trekking from Charmouth over Golden Cap to Symondsbury School.

The event was held in memory of Rebecca Harris, who died in December 2014. Around £5,000 has been raised from the walk, which will be split evenly between Symondsbury School and the Fortuneswell Cancer Trust.

Organiser Victoria Upton, said: “We were overwhelmed at how many people turned up.

"Thanks to so many people we raised funds way beyond expectation. It was an amazing atmosphere.

"The generosity of local businesses in helping us get the walk organised and providing raffle prizes, contributed hugely to raising the funds that will support the amazing work of Fortuneswell Cancer Trust in Dorchester as well as a new graded reading system for Symondsbury School. The books will be a lasting legacy to a parent, and friend, who set an example to us all by encouraging her boys to read and enjoy books in school and at home”

Suzie Turner from the Riverside Restaurant, where Rebecca worked, raised £1700.

"Becca was a very good friend of mine and a very brave lady" said Suzie.

"I never got to say goodbye to her and that’s why I’m doing this.”

There were some creative methods of wearing Rebecca's favourite colour, purple - including floral hats and berets to purple trainers, finger nails and some customised t-shirts with the phrase 'This one's for Bec'.

Rebecca's dad, Rob Harris, said: "Becca would have laughed at all of us doing this.

"She was a fun girl. She would, however, have been very proud of what we have achieved and I thank everybody for taking part."

Donations can be made online until the end of June at justgiving.com/rebeccaharrismemorialwalk or cheques can be made payable to Fortuneswell Cancer Trust or cash sent to Symondsbury School, or handed in at the school office during school hours.
