BETWEEN 600 and 700 people came to bask in the sun and enjoy the fun of the annual Brit Valley Rotary Club dog show on Sunday.

The number of dogs entered was more than ever with more than 140 entry forms, with both pedigree and novelty classes well supported with more than 25 dogs in the most popular groups.

The day is expected to have raised more than £3,000. Two main charities are Diabetes UK and Canine Partners, dog assistance charity

Gill Partridge judged in the pedigree classes and Haydon vet Steve Warren in the novelty ring.

By the end of the afternoon the verdicts were announced.

Best in show was a dog called Whispa owned by Mrs Val Allen from Yeovil and runner up was Toby, owned by Rosemary Foot from Mosterton.

The overall winner in the novelty ring was last year’s cup holder – a whippet called Lady owned by Mrs L  Aylett from Andover.

The President’s Cup is his favourite dog of the day.

Charles Gaskill gave it to the black Labrador Zebedee, who did the Canine Partners demonstration.

Rotary member John Dobinson said the dog was amazing.

He said: “He was opening and closing cupboards, putting clothes in a washing machine, he pulled socks off undid a fleece pulled it off. He even picked 50p off his grass. He was a wonderful dog and he certainly earned his prize, It was a lovely demonstration by Malcolm Wells OBE”

There were also displays from the Portland Dog Agility club and main sponsors Humberts had a tent on the West Bay showground.

The refreshment tent was busy all afternoon and tea and cakes cooked food provided by The Brit Valley Rotary Club members.

Shirley Lambert supervised the tea and cakes and Lindsey Blair the cooked food, which was donated by Haddon House.

The cakes were made by  members and friends.

The show was started as a fund raiser for Dorset Cancer Care by Annie Beattie and was taken over by The Brit Valley Rotary Club..

Proceeds will be split between Diabetes UK, Canine Partners and Rotary charities.

Mr Dobinson added: “We particularly like to help groups of young people.”

The club also wanted to thank sponor Humberts for all its support.
