AN INVESTIGATION was launched after a house in Bridport was damaged in a fire on Sunday evening.

Crews were alerted to a property in South Mill Lane at 6.20pm after a worried neighbour reported smoke coming from a window.

The first crew of firefighters were on scene in six minutes.

The fire affected a first floor living room. Crews also worked to prevent the fire affecting neighbouring properties.

The fire was extinguished by 7pm by three crews of firefighters from Bridport and Beaminster stations. They remained on scene for a while ventilating the property.

There were no reports of any injuries or anyone being in the property at the time of the incident.

A spokesman for Dorset Fire and Rescue Service said: "We believe the fire was caused accidentally, possibly by an unattended candle, but due to the extent of the damage we cannot say with any certainty.

"There was 70 per cent smoke damage to the first floor, and in the room the fire originated in there was 100 per cent damage, with 50 per cent smoke damage.

"There was also water damage on the ground floor due to fire fighting."
