LYME Regis residents were able to shape plans for a 'long-awaited' play park at a consultation session last week.

Locals were given the chance to cast their vote on their favourite of seven schemes for the Anning Road play park at the event at the Jubilee Pavilion - which will help Lyme Regis Town Council agree on a final design.

The council is investing £100,000 for the new play park to be constructed - along with a further £20,000 to improve the BMX track.

Elliott Herbert, operations manager at Lyme Regis Town Council said: "We had some theme-based designs and some component-based play parks.

"We asked people to come down and pick their favourite play park and tell us if there is anything they would change. We have had a lot of feedback about a zip wire and there is flexibility in all the designs to hopefully make that happen.

"We would like to get the scheme in place before the summer, that's our aim. Hopefully the final design will be resolved by the full council meeting at the end of the month. We're really keen to get this project started as soon as we can. It is vital for the community and visitors to the town to have a focal point for families."

Lyme Regis resident Andrea Budden said a new play park was long overdue and would stop her having to take her children out of the town to use suitable facilities.

"A new play park in the town really has been long-awaited" she said.

"It is about time they did something about it if I'm being honest. At the moment, we have to go to towns like Bridport for a play park - so it is definitely needed in Lyme.

"I'm 100 percent behind it and and my kids cannot wait for it to happen."

Lyme Regis resident Lynda Cox thinks the new play park would make a big difference to young people in Lyme Regis.

She said: "The designs all look really nice and it's great to be able to visualise what will be built.

"There really isn't enough for kids to do in the town, so this would make a real difference to a lot of people.

"I struggled to pick my favourite, but the most important thing is that we have a proper play area in Lyme Regis."

A working group of councillors will meet again to look at residents’ feedback, before the Full Council formally appoints the chosen designer.

The redevelopment of the play park and BMX track is one of two major projects the town council is funding from its 2015/16 budget, along with the replacement of the seafront railings.
