OSCAR nominee Emily Watson made an appearance in Bridport to introduce a screening of The Theory of Everything which she appears in.

Bridport's five-day From Page to Screen festival is the UK’s only film festival celebrating the art of adaptation.

The festival finishes today, Sunday.

Across the five days there were talks, workshops and of course a wide range of screenings of some of cinema’s finest literary adaptations.

Emily Watson was at the festival to talk about The Theory of Everything in which she plays Beryl Wilde, the mother of Felicity Jones’ Jane Wilde Hawking.

However, her part in the filmmaking process provided an insight in to Eddie Redmayne’s Oscar winning performance and what it was like playing Stephen Hawking.

There was also a guest appearance from this year’s guest curator, Deborah Moggach, author of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and screenwriter of the 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice starring Keira Knightley.

The festival is produced by Bridport Arts Centre in collaboration with the Electric Palace with screenings and events taking place across the two venues.

Laura Cockett, director of the Bridport Arts Centre, was delighted with how the festival went.

She said: “It’s been an absolutely fantastic five days. I think as well it had far better attendances than recent years.

“I think it’s actually exceeded my expectations. The calibre of the films we’ve had is tremendously high.

“It’s my first festival but everybody keeps talking about what a great buzz there’s been.”

Deborah Moggach's talks on adapting a book for a film and having your own work adapted in to a film proved to provide real insight and were a personal highlight for Laura.

She said: “She did a lecture and a workshop on adapting for the screen and the challenges of that which is so difficult to do.

“Then in the evening we screened The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which is the sequel to a film adapted from her own work. It was a really fascinating day to hear about her experiences.”

Alongside The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Pride and Prejudice and The Theory of Everything, there were screenings of The Imitation Game, Paddington and The Princess Bride.

From Page to Screen was founded in 2009 by Bridport Arts Centre, hoping to build on the heritage of the Bridport Prize.
