RESIDENTS were evacuated from a Lyme Regis block of flats after a fuse box caught fire.

Homes were left without power while repair works were carried out following an electrical blaze.

Two crews from Lyme Regis and Charmouth were called to the scene at the first floor of Lewesdon Court, Silver Street at around 11am.

Dorset Police closed part of Silver Street while firefighters dealt with the incident.

Residents were evacuated while firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the blaze using a carbon dioxide extinguisher and a thermal imaging camera.

One elderly resident could not be evacuated and was monitoried by a firefighter until the incident was over.

Around 20 customers had their power supply cut off while repairs were carried out.

A spokesperson from Western Power Distirbution said: "We had a call from the fire service at 11.20am to ask us to attend.

"We arrived at 12pm and isolated the supply. This meant we had to turn off supply for 20 customers in order for repairs. The power was re-established at 12.57pm."
