Councillors backed plans to build affordable homes on the outskirts of the town.

Members of the town council’s planning and highways committee have supported the outline proposals by Yarlington Housing Group to erect 15 rental properties on land owned by the Community Land Trust between Charmouth Road and Timber Hill – next to the park and ride field.

A public consultation will be held before detailed plans are submitted to West Dorset District Council. Town councillors back the proposals, but raised concerns over drainage at the site.

Cllr Anita Williams, chairman of the planning and highways committee, said: “The committee is happy to support the application for outline planning consent by Yarlington Housing in respect of the site identified for affordable, rental housing, by the Lyme Regis Community Land Trust. The committee is of the view that the provision of affordable housing would be of benefit to the town. There was discussion regarding drainage with particular regard to storm water, given the topography of the area and the existing problems with water run-off.

“The committee has asked West Dorset District Council to take note of the committee’s concern in this regard.”
