LYME REGIS: More than 300 swimmers braved icy waters to raise thousands for charity.

Hundreds made a splash at the Lyme Lunge on New Year’s Day – marking the 100th anniversary of the sinking of HMS Formidable in Lyme Bay.

Organisers hope to raise more than £5,000 for charity once all funding is collected.

The event was organised by the Rotary Club of Lyme Regis – with Jim Moseley believing it was the most popular Lyme Lunge ever.

“It exceeded all expectations compared to previous years” said Mr Moseley.

“In terms of the swimmers taking part, we had more than ever before – over 300. There were so many people watching as well.

“The weather wasn’t too bad, apart from the water being quite cold. But we were delighted with everything and I imagine once everything is counted we will have raised more than £5,000 for different charities.

“So far, we have collected around £4,000 – with about £3,000 to our chosen charity Help For Heroes, to tie in with our 100 years commemoration of the sinking of HMS Formidable in Lyme Bay.”

Newlywed teacher at Bridport Primary School – Flo Le Gassick took to the water with new husband Nigel and her wedding party, all wearing wedding dresses.
