BRIDPORT: The oldest family business in the country has released a new book to celebrate 500 years of history.

Butchers RJ Balson & Son, established in Bridport in 1515, are marking their quincentennial anniversary with the publication of '500 Years Behind the Block'.

This is the first book that master butcher Richard Balson has personally been involved with, and tells the story of his family's colourful history in West Dorset.

“It's unbelievable to think we have been here for 500 years” said Richard. “I've been told that only around 30 percent of businesses go into a second generation - so it's quite incredible to think that I am the 26th generation of my family to run the business.

“It was always my aim to produce this book for our 500th birthday, but it's taken about a year to actually get it all together. It's of great interest to anyone who runs a family business, anyone who is a butcher and anyone who is interested in local history.

“It is a celebration for the town - we don't really promote ourselves enough in Bridport. There are a lot of great shops and businesses in the town and we really should give ourselves more credit.”

Richard's personal memories date back to 1960, from living and working in West Allington - and the relationship shared working with his father Donald for over 40 years.

The book looks at the story of Richard's ancestry - bringing his personal touch to tales about his loyal customers and local farmers.

Next year, Richard will be celebrating the first time any British family business has reached the 500-year milestone - and plans are already in place for a charity birthday party in Bridport.

“On September 12, we're going back to the town hall - which is where the business started” added Richard.

“Very few people have had a 500th birthday party so there will be a lot of special guests coming together.

“We will be raising money for Cancer Research UK at the party as it is a great cause that everyone can get behind, and we are hoping to have some big names there.”

The book is available now at RJ Balson & Son, Bridport Post Office, Washingpool Farm Shop and Waterstones, Bridport.
