LYME REGIS: A popular footpath running from Coombe Street to the River Lim has been reopened after a public inquiry by Dorset County Council.
The footpath, known locally as Bagster’s Steps, has been closed since the 1990s but the town council has long been campaigning to have the steps reopened and added to the map of the town.
Dorset County Council submitted a notice to open the steps under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to determine the outcome.
An inspector held a public inquiry at Woodmead Halls in Lyme Regis earlier this summer.
After listening to arguments both for and against the reopening of the footpath by the public, the inspector confirmed the order of reopening, as the footpath had previously been used by the community for more than 20 years.
