WEST Dorset District councillors have backed plans to remove a pinch point at West Bay.

Members of the executive committee agreed to ask Dorset County Council to implement the widening of the Haddon House pinch point to allow the return of two-way traffic.

The authority has allocated £17,000 for the work to be done.

Councillors also agreed to ask the county council to design a more appropriate crossing than that originally proposed between St John’s Church and the shops in discussion with local members.

A sum of £10,000 has been set aside for that work.

Local member David Tett spoke at the meeting of his strong support for the proposals.

He said: “We are now at the busiest time of the year and therefore I would hope these works are put in hand at the earliest possible moment.”

Cllr Tett said he would also like to see alterations made to the junction of West Bay Road and Station Road, which has also been the cause of much public concern.

He was told that the issue was a highways matter to be dealt with by the county council, although members did agree to ask the county council to note the concerns of local residents.

Council leader Robert Gould said: “I think what we have before us is a pragmatic way forward that deals with the real concerns, particularly about the pinch point, that need to be addressed.”
