Record carnival grants

RECORD donations totalling over £8,000 will be winging their way to local organisations after a brilliantly successful year by dedicated Lyme Regis Regatta and Carnival Committee.

A small organising band of five people has not only achieved what is believed to be one of its best ever results but has extended its activities to boost the regatta and carnival's reputation for providing all year round service and entertainment for the public.

Commented committee chairman Teresa Evemy: "We are delighted to announce the grants to local good causes.

"It has been a very successful year thanks to the support of the people and the traders of Lyme. We have promoted more events than ever throughout the year and have been able to support through the grants nearly 30 good causes."

The chairman's remarks were endorsed by secretary Alan Vian who said the committee was most encouraged by the level of support and goodwill it received from residents and the local commercial sector.

He added: "We believe we are providing good value and we are sure we are on the right track with people already enquiring about next year's regatta and carnival so that they can book their holidays to coincide with the event (August 4 to the 11th)."

Praising the committee, Mayor Ken Whetlor said: "They deserve every accolade. They work incredibly hard for the town. Just what would we do without them!"

Donations will be going to: After School Club; Brownies; Christmas Lights Committee; Coastguard; Community Players; Fishermen's Association; Football Club (youth section); Get Together Club; Guides; Hallett Court; Lym Valley Scouts.

Lyme Regis Junior Band; Lyme Regis Lifeboat Crew; Lyme Regis Majorettes; Lyme Regis Town Band; Operatic Society; Over Seventies Christmas Dinner; Pantomime Society; Power Boat Club (youth section), Response Medical Services; Sailing Club (youth section) St Michael's School; Tae Kwon Do Club; Tuesday Night Youth Clubs; Under 12 Forum; Youth Theatre.
