A NEW flood warning system is being developed for Uplyme.

The Environment Agency will help residents and the parish council form a flood resilience plan.

A drop-in session is to be held on Wednesday, March 13 at the scout hut in Rhode Lane from 10.30am to 1.30pm.

Residents will be able to find out about the flood warning system and anyone affected by flash flooding is encouraged to attend.

Coun Peter Whiting, chairman of the parish council and the flood working party, said: “The Environment Agency is to hold workshops on flood warnings for Uplyme and Lyme Regis in March and has appointed a community engagement officer, Kate Taylor, from its flood resilience unit to develop a community flood plan for Uplyme.

“This is to help residents and businesses plan and decide what actions they can take before and during a flash flood, to minimise the risks to people and property.”

Coun Whiting said a positive meeting took recently between MP Neil Parish, county and district councillors and officers from East Devon District Council and Devon County Council.

As a result, a survey of streams and culverts is under way, as are designs for improvement of the drainage. Parish clerk Lois Wakeman said: “A step in the right direction at last, although it will be some while before funding is found and construction can start.”
