Bridport Gig Club hold fundraising big breakfast

Bridport rowers went to work on an egg – and plenty of bacon – when the gig club held a fundraising big breakfast.
The event held at the Salt House at West Bay was run in conjunction with a sponsored row to Lyme Regis and back.
The day was organised by Andy Preston, the club’s funding and social secretary, who worked tirelessly to pull the event together.
The breakfast was enjoyed by rowers before and after their rows to Lyme, locals and visitors to West Bay and even a cycling club from Chard.
There was also a tombola, cake and book stall and a rowing competition; the fastest time to row 500m on a rowing machine.
The club managed to raise in excess of £1,000, apart from the sponsorship money which will go towards the purchase of the gig Wolf from Salcombe Estuary Rowing Club.
This impressive fundraising result was aided by Punch and Judy Bakers, Rachel’s Kiosk, John Bright Fencing and Morrisons who all donated produce or vouchers, or sold produce at a discounted rate to the club.
The sponsored row was supported by Weymouth Gig Club who rowed in Isolde and Sir Tristan, Swanage Gig Club in Dancing Ledge and Arrypaye, Bristol Gig Club in Isambard and Bridport rowed in Dagger and Bucky Doo.
“The first leg of the row started at 8.30am to Lyme with mostly women rowing and the return leg, with mostly men, left Lyme at 11.15am,” said Michelle Tiffin, from the club.
“Weymouth led the way on both legs and even though the event was not a race the competitive spirit seemed to come out in all the crews. The first Bridport ladies crew completed the 1st leg in one hour. The day was very successful all round and lots of requests were voiced for a re-run next year. “The club hope to stage the Big Breakfast as a regular fundraising event throughout winter months and the row again this time next year.”
