Dr Lewthwaite was born in Calcutta and raised in Bristol.
He studied classics at school and archaeology at Cambridge University, receiving a 1st in 1974 and a Phd in 1985. He taught and researched at the universities of Bradford, Lancaster and Sheffield.
He has lived in Bradford since 1983, and in Horton Bank Top since 1992. In 2004 he was elected to Bradford Council in the Wyke ward.
He has stood for Royds in 2007 and 2008 and again this election.
