A MACHINE lined up for Olympic opening events is to have its first outing in Bridport town centre.

Activate Performing Arts pedal powered wind collecting carnival cart will take part in the Battle for the Winds performance to celebrate the opening of the Olympic 2012 sailing events in Weymouth and Portland.

But the seven-seater pedal powered contraption will first be in Bucky Doo Square on July 4 before touring the county on its way to the opening event on July 28.

Wendy Petitdemange, theatre producer for Activate, said: “I am incredibly excited to be bringing the cart to Bridport for its first outing.

“It’s an opportunity for local people to get close up to this amazing vehicle as later it will form part of the Battle For The Winds event in Weymouth planned for the opening weekend of the Olympics. From Bridport it tours around Dorset and there will be more events throughout the summer as well. My aim is for as many local people to see it as possible.”

The Wind Master Herbie Treehead and his troupe of performers will man the cart. They will include Jon Croose, Rob Lee, Niki Mc Cretton and Marc Parrot.

It is hoped people will create wind-generating devices of their own at workshops with artists Sarah Butterworth and Lorna Rees.

The machine will be in Bucky Doo Square from 10am to 4pm.
