Bridport: Can you give time to museum?

Bridport Museum prides itself on giving visitors a warm welcome – and the team there are looking for more friendly volunteers.

The museum in South Street is now well into its summer season and wants to hear from people who would like to take a turn on reception.

Most volunteers spend half a day a week in the museum welcoming visitors, encouraging them to explore the museum and selling gifts in the shop.

The museum tells the story of the town’s history from its origins to the present day with displays on artefacts from a nearby Roman hill-fort and the world famous rope and net making industries. As well as the permanent displays there is a programme of temporary exhibitions.

Photographs, costume, lace, dolls, coins and fine art are among the collections held.

The Local History Collection contains a wide range of materials for people researching their local or family history. The museum provides full training and volunteers don’t have to know anything about the history of the town.

“It’s a really friendly atmosphere – with plenty of tea and biscuits provided.” said Curator Emily Hicks.

“People might like to consider volunteering if they are looking for a job, perhaps to build up their skills and CV.”

Current volunteers enjoy the fact that the museum is a good place to meet nice people and learn a lot about the local area.

The museum is open from Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm, with free entry, although donations are welcome.
