RUNNERS dashed over Colmer's Hill in the first 10km challenge to take place in Symondsbury.

The first race took place at the Symondsbury Estate last weekend in association with running group Transition Running.

The multi terrain 10km-running event started and finished at Symondsbury Estate’s Manor Yard in the centre of the village. The race headquarters for the inaugural event was situated in Symondsbury Tithe Barn, dating back to the 15th century.

A total of 160 runners took part in the challenge. Athletes were met with a mainly off road course, running on privately owned paths and tracks, as well as incorporating a climb to the top of the iconic Colmer's Hill.

This is the first time an event has ever had the opportunity to use the privately owned hill. The views around the route were a welcome distraction from the arduous run to the top. The Symondsbury route is not one for the faint hearted.

The contestants met at the Manor Yard in the centre of Symondsbury village. The race was chip timed and every runner received a goody bag and finishers medal.

Ms Day said plans were coming together for the event to return next year.

She said: “We are overwhelmed with the reviews and comments we have received.

"We started out just planning a running event that would bring together the local community, and create something different to other running events in the area."

She added: "Lots of the runners claimed it exceeded their expectations, with some stating it is the best running event they have ever taken part in.

"We are already in the process of planning the event for next year. So if you think you can take on the challenge, keep your eyes peeled for information on next year’s event."
