COUNCILLORS have given the green light to controversial proposals to demolish part of a trading estate to make way for housing.
West Dorset District Council’s planning committee approved proposals to demolish part of St Michael’s Trading Estate in Bridport to build 91 new homes, and refurbish the remainder of the estate.
The committee heard from 31 speakers, the majority of whom objected to the plans.
Councillors approved outline plans to construct 83 homes made up of 48 houses and 35 apartments, as well as full permission to provide nine residential units in the Lilliput Building, which will be part demolished and refurbished. Listed building consent was also granted for the Lilliput Building proposals.
The scheme will provide 22 affordable homes.
Cllr Ian Gardner, West Dorset District Council’s portfolio holder for planning, said: “The district council adopted a Joint Local Plan alongside Weymouth & Portland Borough Council in 2015. The plan was informed by councillors and residents as a guide to development in the area. The St Michael's Trading Estate area is allocated for mixed use development within this local plan.
“We’re satisfied that we have been able to work with the applicant and reach agreement on the plans for St Michael's Trading Estate.
“Once completed, this development will provide a good mix of open market housing, affordable housing and employment space.”
