THE OWNER of two coastal cafés is getting set to open a new 1930s-inspired eatery on Chesil Beach.

Steve Attrill, who runs the Hive Beach Café in Burton Bradstock and the Watch House Café in West Bay, will be opening the doors to The Club House in West Bexington this spring.

The new café will feature "a more upmarket theme" and will showcase sustainable seafood and local produce. The Club House will also feature a chef's table and an open kitchen for customers to watch their food being prepared.

The Club House will take over the site of the former Blue Anchor Café - with views spanning across Lyme Bay.

Mr Attrill said: "We've always dreamt of owning three sites along the South West Coast Path where we joked we could start off with breakfast at the Watch House Café, move onto lunch at Hive Beach Café and then dinner.

"Each are roughly 3km apart so when this site came up in West Bexington, we just knew we had to jump on it. Because it used to be called The Club House, we thought it would be a nice idea to maintain the name by which it has always been known as a sort of tribute to the legacy of the area."

In 1932, West Bexington was developed into a holiday village - with a club house and outdoor Olympic-sized swimming pool built, along with beach huts.

West Bexington failed to take off as a holiday village due to the outbreak of the Second World War - meaning the club house was converted into a café and a small shop.

Mr Attrill said: "It will be a much smaller and more intimate space and will be run on a bookings only basis.

"We're taking a minimalist approach and hope to preserve as many of the existing features as we possibly can to be able to maintain a 1930s members-only club feel to the building."

He added: "Our main aim is to infuse as much light and sunshine into the building by the installation of some new bi-fold doors which will open up in summer onto the extended deck and garden.

"We’ll be keeping a lot of the existing wallpaper and beautiful wooden flooring which we’ve been lucky with as they were in such fantastic condition."

The business is aiming to open the doors at The Club House by the end of April, but planning permission and building work could hold up the launch.

"We’re delighted that we’re able to grow our business under the reputation of a well known and loved brand synonymous with quality dishes and great customer service," added Mr Attrill.

"Without a doubt, we have the most amazingly dedicated team of individuals, passionate about the work they do and the people they serve which is all thanks to the incredible location we are so lucky to be surrounded by."
