SPIRITS ran high as Bridport ushered in the festive season at the town's annual Christmas Cheer celebration.

Organisers have labelled yesterday's festive fun as the "biggest and best" event yet.

Locals and visitors gathered in the town centre to get their hands on Christmas presents and festive treats.

Despite a slight delay, Father Christmas made an appearance and helped town mayor, Cllr Ros Kayes, formally switch on the Christmas lights.

Cllr Kayes said: "I think we have one of the nicest Christmas events in the south west.

"It's wonderful to see such crowds and so many community stalls. It shows Bridport at its best and the town centre as the jewel of the south coast."

Revellers were able to enjoy performances from the St Swithun’s Band, Acoustic Rooster and the Bridport Young Performers and Colfox Choir – while more live music was on offer across the town.

Youngsters from St Mary’s, Bridport Primary, Salway Ash, Powerstock, St Catherine’s, Loders, Thoners and Burton Bradstock Schools also performed Christmas songs.

At the arts centre, town hall and Electric Palace, shoppers had the chance to grab a festive bargain, with locally made gifts on offer – while many town centre shops stayed open late.

Terri Foxwell, event organiser, said: "There's so many children here, it's such a family-orientated event.

"It's a really festive atmosphere and this is our biggest and best year yet."

Youngsters were also able to meet Father Christmas in Santa’s Grotto.

Festive prizes were also handed out. Sebastian Pawley was named winner of the children’s design a Christmas card competition with his Colmers Hill design, ahead of Phoebe Winding, who took second place.

The best-dressed window competition was won by Waterstones, for the firm’s 12 Days of Christmas-themed display. Gemma’s Flowers took second place, ahead of Higos Insurance in bronze position.
