A MAN has been rescued by firefighters after becoming "stranded" by rising flood water in Bridport.

A technical rescue team from the Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Service was sent to the Dreadnought Trading Estate close to the River Simene in Bridport to rescue a man surrounded by fast moving flood water this afternoon.

A spokesman for the service said the team were setting up inflatable rescue equipment to get to the man.

The spokesman said: "They are they to rescue a male casualty who is unharmed but who is stranded on a small section of land surrounded by four to five feet of deep, fast-moving water."

Speaking at the scene, Bridport watch manager Steve Pask, said: "One guy had gone for a walk and the water had risen very quickly around him.

"It was almost like he was left on an island of land, surrounded by water.

"He had been there for an hour and managed to get himself stranded. He was okay in the end, just a bit cold."

Mr Pask also offered advice for people who are outside when flooding occurs.

He added: "Just make sure to be carefully, especially when you are driving.

"Flood water can be a lot deeper than you think and it can rise very quickly."
