STORMY conditions have caused delays on roads across west Dorset – after the Met Office issued a fresh weather warning for heavy rain.

The A35 was partially blocked between Winterbourne Abbas and The Hut junction at Long Bredy due to standing water. There were reports of long queues for eastbound traffic.

This afternoon, the B3165 between Uplyme and the A35 Hunter's Lodge junction was blocked by a fallen tree, which landed on a car. Luckily, no-one was inside the vehicle when the incident took place.

Firefighters were called to rescue a man from flood water in Bridport, after he become "stranded" near the River Simene.

Standing water at the Monkeys Jump roundabout in Dorchester has also been causing delays.

At the A356 in Misterton, the road is blocked with very slow traffic in both directions between the A3066 junction and the Lecher Lane junction, due to flooding.

She said: “We had a lot of abuse from drivers, who didn’t like being asked to slow down.

“At one point, speeding traffic was sending waves of water over us and hitting the houses. We were desperately trying to stop the water entering our houses. The council also provided us with sand bags.”

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain, with the warning amber for Devon and Somerset.

A spokesman for the Met Office, said: “A further broad area of heavy, persistent rain will move northwards across southwest England.

“Although the more persistent rain should clear from Devon by early afternoon, heavy and possibly thundery showers and likely to follow.

“Please be prepared for disruption to transport, due to localised flooding, whilst flooding of homes and businesses is also possible.”

The Environment Agency has issued a flood warning for the River Char at Dolphins River Park in Charmouth.

An Environment Agency spokesman said: “Further rainfall is forecast this evening and river levels in this area can be expected to rise rapidly following heavy rain.”

A flood warning has also been put in place for the River Brit and the Upper Frome at Maiden Newton.

A spokesman added: “Water levels in the River Brit at Newtown and Southgate Old Mill, Beaminster, are rising and expected to peak at Beaminster later today.

“Further rainfall is forecast this afternoon and this evening.”

Police have issued advice for motorists to ensure they stay safe in the stormy conditions.

A spokesman for Bridport Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "With the weather we have been getting today, please be careful when using the roads.

"Check your speeds when driving or riding and if using bikes, make sure you stand out with appropriate lighting and clothing."
