A HAT signed by an operatic legend will go under the hammer in Bridport to raise money for a west Dorset charity.

Weldmar Hospicecare is auctioning a host of items next week, in an event organised by Busby at its Bridport salerooms.

All of the items being sold by Weldmar have been donated by the charity’s supporters and include jewellery, watches, vintage clothing, art and some vintage Barbie dolls.

There is also one very special item in the sale – a signed hat, donated to Weldmar many years ago by Luciano Pavarotti, the Italian operatic tenor who died in 2007.

Hugo Busby, chief auctioneer, is pleased to be helping out Weldmar after a family member was involved in setting up the hospice.

He said: “We are really happy to be supporting this local charity for all the support it provides to people at a time of great need.

“Weldmar is especially close to my family, as my late father-in-law, Major John Greener, was so closely involved in the conception of Joseph Weld Hospice, Weldmar’s inpatient unit in Dorchester”.

The auction will be held at the salerooms at The Old Hemp Store, North Mills, on Thursday, October 6, starting at 10am.

Jon Panton, Weldmar’s business fundraising manager, said: “We are very grateful to everyone who has donated such wonderful items for this auction – and to Busby for hosting it for us.

“It is only with the support of the local community and businesses that Weldmar staff are able to be here to provide our outstanding services to local people at a time when they need us most”.

Last month, the charity held its 21st annual fete to raise additional funds. Crowds enjoyed more than 40 stalls and crockery smashing, live music, classic car displays, tombolas, a silent auction and bric and brac stalls.
