THERE will be jiving for the Jungle in Lyme Regis on Saturday (sept 17).

Saturday's event is the culmination in the latest round of fund raising for a group of concerned Lyme citizens to go back to Calais to support refugees there.

There were 11 volunteers selling T-shirts in Broad Street for the group of local people to take over to Calais on their next trip to volunteer in ‘The Jungle’.

They will work with ‘Help Refugees’ again, a charity set up in September 2015 to support, feed and clothe the thousands of refugees fleeing conflict and persecution and arriving in Calais.

Volunteer Belinda Bawden said: "It is a huge task completely reliant on donations and funds from concerned people in Europe, particularly Britain.

"The volunteers collected a staggering £537 from the generosity of Lyme locals and holiday-makers and sold £116-worth of Katharine Hamnett-designed ‘Choose Love’ T-shirts on behalf of ‘Help Refugees’.

"They were then delighted and overwhelmed by their last individual donation of £200 from a local woman, discreetly given in a card saying “Because I choose Love too”."

Many local businesses have agreed to support ‘Jiving for the Jungle’ with collection tins or displaying posters publicising the fundraising event at the Town Mill on Saturday from 7pm.

There is also a donations page at mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/lucycampbell1 for those preferring to give online.

Belinda added: "The volunteers agreed that Lyme Regis locals and visitors showed immense compassion and generosity, putting politics aside to reach out to their fellow human beings across the Channel.

"The warmth and interest shown has been really uplifting and the best start to the local campaign to raise awareness and funds for refugees in Calais."
