A SERIES of focus groups will be examining how Bridport’s positive food culture is helping local people to make better food choices for personal health and for the health of the planet.

Bournemouth University researcher Dr Juliet Wiseman has teamed up with Linda Hull from Foodfuture Bridport to examine what makes the town a beacon for good food in Dorset.

Dr Wiseman said: "The NuFeast Project started in Poole but attention quickly turned to Bridport where many factors of a positive food culture are already in place."

Ms Hull added: "The concept of nutritional well-being is at the centre of NuFeast. It seeks to explore how sustainable food and eating practices, including growing food at home and in community gardens and allotments, is associated with food knowledge, confidence and skills.

"In and around Bridport there is plenty of local food including fruit, vegetables, dairy and meat. Bridport has a thriving high street with markets and cafes selling fresh foods. This makes Bridport different from many towns and cities throughout the UK.

"Could you be part of the NuFeast project by joining a discussion on the local food scene and how your food choices affect your health and the health of the planet?

"Four day time and evening discussion groups will be held in different venues in Bridport during the week commencing July 18.

"Nutritional well-being means more than just getting the right amount of nutrients – it includes being happy with the food available, trusting the source of food, knowing how to produce culturally appropriate and healthy meals."

To take part you only need to live in or near Bridport, be over 18 and eat food.

More than 20 people have already signed up and another ten people are needed to join the project.

Ms Hull added: "The conversations are set to be lively and will also cover what threats and opportunities exist for our access to good food.

"We import 40 per cent of our food so there are bound to be changes as we enter the post Brexit era.”

Everyone taking part will be rewarded with a Spend a Tenner Locally Voucher to spend at participating businesses.

The results of the NuFeast project will be used to share best practice with other towns and cities to make improved choices about access to local, sustainable food. The sessions will take place at 7-9pm on Tuesday July 19 at Waitrose and at 7-9pm on Thursday July 21 at Mountfield. To book your place contact lindahull.work@gmail.com indicating your preferred date.
