CHILDREN at Powerstock School took part in a bit of 'living history' last week when they met a school master with a slate and a cane.

Retired Beaminster School teacher Bruce Upton oversaw a bit of old-fashioned discipline when he showed pupils from Burton class what they would have faced more than 120 years ago under the reign Queen Victoria.

Class teacher Angel Oxenbury said: "We have started a new topic 'going to school'.

"The children are going to be thinking about journeys made to school by themselves and children in other countries.

"To help the children learn what school was like for their parents and grandparents we were lucky enough to have a Victorian school teacher in Mr Upton, the Bridport Education Officer.

"The children, who were all dressed as Victorian children, had a lovely day writing with ink pens, practising Victorian writing, doing simple sums and learning abut what would have happened if the children long ago misbehaved."

During their break the children played Victorian games and sang nursery rhymes and clapping songs.

Mrs Oxenbury added: "Other visitors are planned in the next few weeks, thanks to willing parents and grandparents who have wonderful memories of their school days spent at Powerstock School."
