WEST Dorset celebrated Guy Fawkes Night with a bang as crowds turned out for fireworks displays across Bridport and Lyme Regis.

Organisers of events in Bridport, West Bay and Lyme Regis are pleased with this year's events, as thousands attended the traditional bonfire night evenings.

Organisers of the Round Table event at Bridport Leisure Centre on Saturday believe the fireworks were one of the best displays they have ever organised, as more than 2,000 people enjoyed the event.

Simon Wakely, fireworks organiser at Bridport Round Table, said: "It went from torrential rain in the morning to a lovely evening, so we were blessed with the weather.

"The fireworks were one of our best shows ever. We are very grateful to the folk in Bridport for supporting the event. It is not a money-making thing for us - it is a service to the town. We rarely make any money, but any profit we do make is reinvested into local charities."

Mr Wakely also thanked Bridport Primary School, Bridport FC's youth squad, Bridport Leisure Centre for their support.

In Lyme Regis, organisers also praised the quality of this year's fireworks, while a man proposed to his partner during the display.

Lyme Regis town cryer Alan Vian, said: "We had a bigger crowd than we have had for many years. The fireworks were probably the best we have had in years too - they were spectacular.

"When the sun came out at 3pm, the people came out and enjoyed a fantastic afternoon. During the fireworks, a young man proposed to a young lade, so it was very romantic for them.

"Without the help of these organisations and the town council, we couldn't do anything like this. We have been able to raise enough money to secure next year's event."

More than 1,000 people gathered as West Bay last Thursday for West Bay Days' event, organised jointly with Bridport Carnival Committee.

The event included live music from local band The Antics, along with a fairground rides and food and drink.

One of the organisers Sylvia Stafford, said: "The organisers would like to thank their sponsors, fantastic volunteers and everyone who helped make the evening a success.

"In particular they would like to thank the public for their generous donations to what was a free event which will ensure that there will be a bonfire by the beach in 2016."

The fireworks display planning to take place in Charmouth on Saturday was postponed because of the adverse weather.
