MOTORISTS are being urged to be careful when driving in west Dorset after road were shut because of flooding.

A number of roads across west Dorset are shut, while officers are reminding drivers not to drive through flood water.

A spokesperson for Bridport safer neighbourhood team, said: "Some roads have been closed due to the flooding, as they are impassable and it is not safe to drive on these roads.

"Unfortunately there are a number of cars which have chosen to ignore the road closures and have become stuck in flood waters. Please do not ignore road closures, whatever the reason for them being implemented."

Police are also reminding motorists that it is unlikley insurance companies will pay out if motorists become stuck in flood water, having driver through a road closure.

The spokesperson added: "Care needs to be taken on all roads.

"There is standing water on most roads, coupled with poor visibility and fog mean that care needs to be taken this evening wherever you are driving over west Dorset."

Firefighters from Beaminster were called to flooding at a property along Bridge Street in Netherbury.

The Environment Agency has issued a flood warning for the River Brit at Newtown and Southgate Old Mill in Beaminster following the heavy rainfall.

The rain is expected to ease off this evening, but further showers are expected tomorrow (6) morning.
