TWO adventurers have celebrated 60 years of marriage with friends and family at their 'perfect' home in Bridport.

Pete and Audrey Speedy were married in their home town of Bradford-on-Avon in Wiltshire in September 1955. After travelling the world together, the happy couple could find no better home than Bridport, where they have lived for the last 13 years.

Audrey said: "We have just been back to Bradford-on-Avon and showed all our family and friends where we were married 60 years ago.

"It used to be a small industrial town but now it's just tea shops and antiques shops. The industry has gone.

"We lived there for 50 years, but it was this stunning coastline and the people in Bridport that drew us down here. We just love our perfect home."

Audrey and Pete met in 1952 and tied the knot three years later at the Holy Trinity Church. Over the next five years, they had two sons - who gave them five grandchildren and now their first great grandchild.

To celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary, the couple spent two weeks in Italy.

"We never thought we would have our diamond anniversary," explained Pete. "We went to Symondsbury for our 50th anniversary and said our vows again.

"The secret really is just to make sure you have the best time of your life."

Pete and Audrey are not shy of an adventure, having visited Africa several times, as well as Israel and many parts of Europe.

The couple were particularly fond of Kenya, enjoying several safari treks. Audrey experienced dancing at a Masai camp, while Pete has been deep sea diving in the Indian Ocean.

One of their most meaningful trips was to France, where they visited the British war graves. Audrey found the grave of her uncle, who died in the First World War. During the same stay, they met a Canadian couple with whom they are still in touch with to this day.

Audrey and Pete also spent many happy times in Dorset and Devon and fell in love with Bridport, where 13 years ago, they eventually settled and are now living happily at Peelers Court.

"The scary thing is, it seems like just a couple of years ago that we were getting married," said Audrey. "Time goes so quickly you just don't realise.

"You blink and you little babies have grown up and have their own babies.

"When we look back on what we have done, we think 'these people seem very interesting - I'd like to meet them'. We used to live in West Allington but we love it here. It's full of very nice people and a good crowd."
