A DOG was injured after falling 90ft from a cliff at West Bay.

West Bay Coastguard was called to the incident shortly before 1.30pm on Saturday, September 19. Officers were called to the scene between East Cliff and Freshwater.

A couple were walking their dog, a Welsh springer spaniel, on the coast path. When approaching the dip in the cliff, known as Port Coombe, they released the dog from its lead.

A Coastguard spokesperson, said: “The dog ran down the slope but due to being blind in one eye, it lost its bearings and ran straight over the edge of the cliff, falling around 90ft to the beach below.

“Witnesses on the beach quickly came to the dog’s aid, while the owners hastily descended the cliff at Freshwater and made their way back up the beach to their injured animal."

Calls were also put through to a local emergency vet for help.

“On arrival, the West Bay Officers carefully transported the injured dog back up the length of the beach where they were met by the vet at East Beach car park,” added a Coastguard spokesperson.

“The friendly dog was assessed and then taken to the local veterinary surgery for onward care and treatment.

“The dog’s owners really blamed themselves for this incident, especially as they were so vigilant at keeping their dog on a lead throughout most of the walk.

“It appears that this was just an unfortunate series of events and we wish the dog and its owners the very best and hope for a speedy recovery.”
