A BUMPER turnout made the third Bridport Jurassic Coast Run another success - with new records set by runners of all ages.

Despite the rain and fog, 150 athletes ran along the coast on Sunday, taking part in three races over 10km, 5km and one mile.

Thorncombe Beacon was inaccessible because of heavy fog, but competitors ranging from five years olds to 75 years olds, along with a stag party, all took part in the event.

Bridport Runners chairman Brian Shelley put the increase in people taking part down to more athletes taking up running in the local area.

He said: "It seems as if our Jurassic Coast Runs can only go from strength to strength.

"If you look around Bridport and West Bay on any evening, there are so many people running. I hope that the increase in participation, both in the Bridport Jurassic Coast Run and in membership of Bridport Runners, including our three beginners groups so far, has contributed to this."

Organisers were forced to shorten the 10k route up to Thorncombe Beacon after recommendations by the Coastguard because of safety reasons. Many runners taking part came from clubs across the region, including a stag party from the Lordshill Road Runners of Southampton. The club's fastest runner, Andrew Griggs, won the 10km race in 40 minutes and 44 seconds.

Former Bridport Runners member Lydia O'Donoghue, now of the Ealing Eagles, was the fastest woman to complete the 10km course, clocking up a time of 48 minutes and 54 seconds.

Thomas Crabtree took first place in the 5km race, finishing the course in 23 minutes and 35 seconds - only 11 seconds behind the record time set last year. Olivia Willmore, won won last year's one-mile race, was the first woman to complete the 5km race in 31 minutes and 35 seconds.

The one-mile race for those under the age of 12 took place on the fields near Bridport Leisure Centre. Lucy Guy was the fastest girl to cross the line, while Owen Pitcher was the quickest boy. The race included three five year old boys and a girl taking part as the youngest competitors.
