IT’S a brave child who can contemplate shaving all her hair off but Rosie Leader is doing just that next month.

The 12-year-old from Broadwindsor wanted to do something to support those going through cancer treatment after having lost both her grandparents to the disease.

The Colyton grammar school pupil came up with the idea a few weeks ago and started off with a target of raising £500 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

In a matter of days more than £300 had been pledged on her charity page that mum Elaine raised the limit to £1000 and she’s three quarters of the way there already.

Rosie said: “I just thought shaving my hair off would be quite memorable – it is quite an odd thing to do to raise money so it would capture people’s attention and get more donations.

“We put it at £500 and then we got to £300 very quickly and my mum maybe we should raise it to £1000.

“I am pretty nervous about having no hair but I have very good and I think they will be supportive."

The big day will be at her home on August 10 in front of those friends and family.

Apart from the occasional cake sale and non-uniform day at school this will be Rosie’s first foray into charity fundraising.

Elaine said: “She’s a very determined young lady. We have talked about it a lot before she actually said she wanted to do it because obviously she’s got long ginger hair and it is quite a thing to do.

“I wanted to talk to her about when it’s done and how she’ll feel.

“At her age she often has ideas and then afterwards reality kicks in and she regrets what she’s committed to, like children do.

“She thought about it over days but she is determined to do it and she says she’s really thought hard about that side of it. but she said she can get past that because she knows it will grow back

“But the more money she raises the easier that will be because she is so excited when people donate on her page.

“She lost her grandmother to cancer to oesophagas cancer and there are various other members of the family and our friend is going through treatment.

“I can’t say how proud of her I am.

“Her brother Ryan who is 13 and he is really proud of her and he donated straight away.”

Dad David is equally proud. He said: "She's incredibly determined and absolutely focused on trying to raise as much money as possible for this very worthy cause."
