A BRIDPORT councillor believes she is the only candidate who can oust West Dorset MP Oliver Letwin in May's general election.

Ros Kayes, representing the Liberal Democrats, is hoping her campaign on rural fairness and access will help take her to Westminster - where she believes the Liberal Democrats are likely to once again form part of a coalition government.

A document called the rural bill of rights was launched by Liberal Democrats last week - highlighting inequalities between those living in the countryside and in towns.

"The issues that mean a lot to people in west Dorset will be included in the rural bill of rights" explained Mrs Kayes. "We have spent a lot of time listening to people and the bill brings that all together into one document.

"The concern that keeps coming up is that people don't feel they are treated equally in the countryside, compared to towns."

Mrs Kayes also thinks more needs to be done to help provide affordable housing - and that investment needs to be made in long-term industry, rather than a get rick quick philosophy.

"We also need to have a proper grown-up debate about elderly care, the NHS and welfare" she said. "The problem is these debates are always politicised. What we really need is a grand commission set up including members from different parties. Any reform of the public sector needs consensus agreement.

"I think we also need to take a deep look at the concept of universal services. For example, does everyone who is entitled to child benefit need it?"

Bridport and Lyme Regis News:

Mrs Kayes believes the Liberal Democrats have been able to put the brakes on the Conservatives' more extreme policies in the coalition government. The candidate also admits that not everyone is a fan of party leader Nick Clegg - but thinks that West Dorset will not reflect the national polls, which put the Liberal Democrats on course for a disaster.

"The fact is that with the Conservatives having such dominance in the coalition, you can't have everything that we wanted to see happen" explained Mrs Kayes. "But we have been able to put a stop to some of the disastrous things they wanted to do such as ditching the Human Rights Act and introducing profit-making in state schools.

"If we look at what state the country was in in 2010, all past governments had failed to regulate the banks. We have held the reins tightly on the economy, which was a very brave thing to do, and stopped the economy going into meltdown.

"The picture in west Dorset is not the same as the national polls. A lot of people in the area have told me that they don't like Nick Clegg. He's not an asset on the doorstep, but it is not just about the party leader.

"We desperately need to change our voting system but until we do, unfortunately a vote for the Greens or Labour will be a vote for Oliver Letwin."
