TRAVELLERS have been moved on after they set up camp in a West Bay car park

Caravans were moved into the Station Yard car park on Thursday evening at around 6pm. Police were called to the scene, and travellers moved from the area on Friday morning.

Resident Lesley Brinkworth told the Bridport News: "We reported them to the police last night at about 6.15pm.

"There were children running up and down the street and dogs running around. We put bollards up in case they decided to come into our car park.

"They weren't really causing any problems, but obviously they couldn't stay there. Some people went up to them and told them to leave, but they just got a mouthful of abuse - so must people just kept well away.

"The police told us they would leave in the morning, and by 11am the police had ushered them out and they left without any fuss really."

Dorset County Council will be keeping an eye on where the travellers go, and will take appropriate action if they settle elsewhere in the county.

A spokesperson from Dorset County Council said: "The Traveller Liaison team are aware of the situation and have been liaising with the police.

"It seems that the travellers are on the move, so it didn't get to the stage of having to serve a Section 62 notice."

A local resident who didn’t want to be named said: “They had generators running all night and were making a lot of noise. The police were down here a couple of times on Thursday night.

“Some of the kids were running around in the road and I saw one woman tipping rubbish out of a caravan window onto the car park.

“They were supposed to move on in the morning. I remember the devastation they left behind last time they were here – it was disgusting."

Bridport and Lyme Regis News:

Dorset Police were called to the Station Yard car park at just after 6pm on Thursday.

A police spokesperson said: "Police attended and spoke to the travellers after receiving a call on Thursday evening.

"The travellers left the car park, of their own accord."
