WEST DORSET: A Bridport teenager is going to great lengths to help others by embarking on a volunteering trip to Africa.

Tom Shoemark, 18 from Salway Ash, will be setting off to Tanzania on February 9 and his trip follows the completion of a level 3 diploma in public services at Weymouth College.

He will be volunteering with Raleigh International, a sustainable development charity.

Tom told The News: “The trip will last for 10 weeks and aims to increase water sanitation and hopefully build some renewable water sources.

“I'm really excited and cannot wait to go; it isn't too far away now.

“This is a great opportunity and could be a life-changing experience for me.

“I decided to volunteer with Raleigh International so I can work on real development projects that will make a genuine difference to the lives of others.

“I hope to develop new skills which will help in building my own future.”

There was also a fundraising bingo night for Tom's trip at Salway Ash village hall last Friday, January 16.

The event kicked off at 7pm, with bingo beginning at 7.30pm, and offered a top prize of £50.

Tom, who has raised £160 so far on JustGiving, also hopes to raise awareness of Raleigh International and the work they do.

Raleigh International aims to challenge and empower young people and communities to deliver grassroots sustainable development.

They work in rural communities focusing on access to safe water and sanitation, protecting vulnerable environments and building community resilience.

The charity works in collaboration with volunteers, communities and local partner organisations.

Tom added: “If people are unable to make the bingo and would like to help any donation will be gratefully received.”
