Two keen sea swimmers have set themselves a challenge to raise £2,000 by swimming 10k up the River Dart on Sunday, September 14.

Mary Costello and Andy Travers want to raise the money to help family friend 26-year-old Jack Fishwick who fractured his neck playing rugby in February.

The Symondsbury couple, who are regular all year round sea swimmers, will be getting in the water on Sunday to help pay for Jack’s rehabitilation.

Mary said: “In February this year, while playing rugby, Jack was involved in a tragic accident which has, at the moment, left him with little feeling or useful function from the shoulders down. Jack is a specialist practitioner in musculoskeletal injury with much skill and experience in sports injury rehabilitation.

“Now, with the ongoing support of his family and friends, and with huge personal motivation and steely determination Jack has started his own rehabilitation.

“Currently at Stoke Mandeville, he will, on being discharged, require funding for his ongoing rehabilitation at home.

“We have been swimming regularly at Eype, Burton and West Bay for training, and done two long swims from Seatown to West Bay and from Charmouth to Seatown.”

Jack’s girlfriend’s sister is marrying the couple’s son this month.
