A SERVICE was held in Bridport to commemorate the role of the town in the D-Day landings.
The ceremony at St Mary’s Church marked the 70th anniversary of the event, when thousands of American troops left the Dorset coast for Normandy.
The Reverend Canon Andrew Evans said he was ‘very pleased’ with the turnout on Sunday, which included war veterans, Bridport Mayor Maggie Ray and representatives from a number of military organisations, including the Burma Star Association.
The Rev Can Evans said: “Bridport does this sort of thing really well, it’s something the town takes very seriously.
“We have to remember that this area played a very significant role in what proved to be the beginning of the end of the war in the west.
“There were troops stationed in Walditch and they used the cliffs at Burton Bradstock for training.
“It was a very important occasion.”
