REMEMBER, remember the ninth of November!

A week late, but gunpowder, treason and plot were remembered in style in Bridport and Charmouth at the weekend.

The Bridport Round Table fireworks spectacular and the Charmouth bonfire had to be postponed because of wild weather forecasts.

And despite persistent rain on Saturday, which threatened to make the rearranged events a bit of a damp squib, organisers said they were pleased with the turnout.

Crowds at Bridport Leisure Centre were treated to a stunning display of fireworks which lit up the sky over the town.

Round Table members provided hot dogs and burgers and Sir John Colfox School students served hot drinks and soups while the local sea cadets ran their ‘break a plate’ stall Round Tabler Darren Batten said it was a good night.

“Despite the weather, it was a good crowd, “ he said. “Of course it could have been better because it started to rain at about 6.30pm.

“It isn’t so much a money-making event, it is all about doing something for the town and it is something we have doing for years – and long may it continue.

“It was a cracking display and people really enjoyed it. Good fun was had by all.”

Organiser Simon Wakely added that it was disappointing that so many people had opted to stand outside the leisure centre and watch the display for free.

“It is a shame because it is only a couple of quid to get in, but it is a problem every year. Next year we want to have more amusements to encourage people to come in off the road.”

The Charmouth bonfire and fireworks display was held on the beach and was attended by nearly 600 people. The bonfire, built by residents throughout the day, was lit at 6pm with Pete Wild playing a piano as it was set on fire. The fireworks started just after 7pm.

Ian Simpson, one of the organisers of the Charmouth Bonfire, said it was one of the best yet.

Mr Simpson said: “I think we made the right call in postponing it, because the weather was bad last week. It held out for us on Saturday and it didn’t start raining until the end when we were starting to clear away the debris when everybody was leaving, so that helped us out.

“It was a really successful night for us, and we collected more than £1,200 from people who donated which will go towards the funding of this one, and for the plans for the New Year’s Eve fireworks.

“I think it was one of the best ones yet. We sold all the food and drink and the bonfire was huge, probably the biggest bonfire we have ever had.”
