Dorset weather warning of coastal flood risk
1:58pm Wednesday 30th October 2013 in Bridport
THE Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the South West.
The warning to the public to ‘be aware’ comes just days after the St Jude storm battered the Dorset coast. They said there could be an increased risk of flooding along coastal areas, especially in Dorset.
The yellow weather warning runs from 12 noon on Friday to 6am on Saturday.
A spokesman for the Met Office said: “A spell of heavy rain is expected to affect southern parts of England during Friday and early Saturday. The public should be aware of the possibility of localised flooding and disruption to transport.”
The Chief Forecasters assessment of the situation is that an area of low pressure is currently developing over the Atlantic Ocean and is likely to track close to or across southern England later Friday and early Saturday, bringing with it a spell of wet weather.
He said that 15-30mm of rain could fall across the southern UK. Coastal areas could also experience gales and gusts up to 60 miles an hour, but he said that further inland wind speeds are expected to be much lower.
He said: “Large waves generated by this depression, and a subsequent depression crossing the UK this weekend, combined with increasing tidal heights lead to an increased risk of coastal flooding along the English Channel coast this weekend, especially in Dorset.”
