A week-long event that has been labelled 'a great idea' has been announced to get children out in the garden.

National Children's Gardening Week is a nationwide campaign that is open to families, schools and any organisation that wants to promote the benefits that being in the garden has for children.

The week also highlights the work the charity Greenfingers does in creating gardens in children's hospices.

It has been organised by the Horticultural Trades Association, and takes place annually at the end of May when the weather is warm and gardening is more fun.

This year, it is being held from Saturday, May 26 until Sunday, June 3.

The organisers state that while children love growing plants and being in the garden, they can be impatient for results, so the week aims to capture the children's attention by providing exciting activities that will not only keep them entertained but also enthused.

Projects include creating an edible hanging basket, building a robot composter and making a pizza wheel.

Groves Nurseries in Bridport and Little Groves in Beaminster are two of the garden centres and nurseries throughout the country who help to promote the week.

Charlie Groves said: "It's a great idea with some fun projects on the official website to get the kids out enjoying themselves and learning.

"We also have some ideas for kids on our website like building a mini wildlife pond, a simple bird feeder or hidey holes for bugs and other creatures and are happy to offer any help or advice needed."

The National Children's Garden Week website will be posting gardening projects every week in the run-up to the week itself on their website.
