MORE than 300 people have been able to make it to crucial medical appointments thanks to the work of a community transport scheme.

The community is singing the praises of Beaminster Country Cars, a volunteer car scheme organised by Mike and Vivienne Bateman. They have 13 volunteer drivers who take residents to doctors, dentists, physiotherapists, hospital appointments and to fitness clubs for the elderly. The scheme receives a grant from Dorset County Council to help towards the running costs.

Mike said: “We offer a reliable, friendly service. Our customers only pay for the mileage we travel with them in the vehicle. We will wait for them, and often sit in with them if they want it too.”

One of the ongoing issues of running a volunteer car scheme is recruitment, and Mike is always on the lookout for suitable drivers.

“Because people are working longer or looking after grandchildren," he said. "Finding people to commit to this service is difficult, but I’d prefer someone who can give me a day a month than nothing at all.”

The couple have a good working relationship with local GP surgeries and work closely with them to ensure that there is available transport for patients to get to appointments.

Cllr Rebecca Knox, county councillor for Beaminster, said: “Mike and Viv have been organising and running this volunteer service for many years and for those who use it, it is a lifesaver for them and for their families.

“Getting about for many is difficult particularly in such a rural area. The volunteer drivers take such special care and give way more than just a pick up and drop – they really understand what folk need.

“If anyone can give a bit of time to help the team, which is getting busier and busier, it would be most appreciated. This is an incredibly valuable service and one I continue to support, learn from and encourage others to follow in its footsteps. We in the Beaminster area are very fortunate to have Mike and Viv and the drivers.”

Those who use the service have described it as a 'lifeline’ and ‘a wonderful service.'

Mike said: “We hardly ever turn anyone down. We provide a door-to-door service and we will go anywhere we are needed. We’ve travelled to Southampton and Salisbury for appointments. We are very reasonable and we’re not means tested and non-profit making.”
