TRAGEDY: Criminal charges could be brought against the organisers of the fateful canoeing trip which claimed the lives of four teenagers on Monday.

Police are conducting a full investigation, headed by Det. Supt. Roy Thornley, to prepare a report for the coroner and to decide whether court action should follow.

Dorset's Deputy Chief Constable Tony Pointer said the inquiry would "consider the many individual areas of responsibility of the case and decide, in conjunction with the Crown Prosecution service, whether there are any specific grounds for criminal proceedings."

FLOWER: Flower power filled the hall at St Mary's School, Bridport, when pupils competed in their annual daffodil show.

More than 70 green-fingered youngsters, aged between five and 11, entered the contest, judged by Mr and Mrs Ray Hayward, from the Daffodil Society.

REUNION: Wartime memories of West Bay were recalled when American army veteran Bill Shaffer returned this week to the resort he left nearly 50 years ago.

Ex-Gi (Bill) was a member of the 700-strong 893 tank destroyed battalion who were stationed in Bridport and the surrounding area from March to June 1944.

50 YEARS AGO:

March 22, 1968:

HOME: A young couple, wearied by the unsuccessful search for a suitable place to set up home, have decided to postpone their wedding no longer.

"They have taken possession, for a few shillings a week rent, of an old cottage at Symondsbury, and with some "Do-it-yourself" equipment and combined "know-how" they are transforming it into a home.

The couple are Mr. John Shrewd, a lorry driver for a local haulier firm, and Miss Sally Davis, who, till recently, had been working as a nanny to the children of Sir John and Lady Colfox.

CURRENCY: Considerable interest was shown in the sale of old coins (mentioned by Wanderer last week) by Messrs. William Morey and Sons at the Bull Hotel.

Three hundred lots were offered, with considerable demand for half-crowns in extremely fine condition.

CRICKET: Mr Earnest W Chold-Croft, Bridport Cricket Club's scorer since 1949, was voted off the general committee at the Club's annual meeting at the Greyhound Hotel on Friday.
