BEAMINSTER: A driver was hospitalised after a car hit a tree.

The accident happened shortly after midnight on Saturday on the A3066 near the Netherbury turning, just outside Beaminster.

Firefighters from Beaminster and Bridport were called to the scene and used hydraulic cutting equipment to remove the roof and a door from the vehicle and free the driver.

The woman, in her 50s, suffered serious head and leg injuries.

It is thought there were not any witnesses to the crash.

A spokesman for South West Ambulance Service said: "A car had an unwitnessed accident and went head-on in to a tree.

"A female in her 50s suffered serious lower leg and head injuries in the accident.

"She was cut free by firefighters before being taken to Dorset County Hospital."

A spokesman for Dorset Police said that the woman's injuries were 'serious but not life-threatening.'

No update is available at this time.

A spokesman said he could not give any information as to the car involved or any other details.

They were conveyed to hospital by ambulance.
