Bridport businesses braced for works

BRIDPORT’S businesses and shoppers braced themselves for traffic chaos on Monday when Southern Gas was due to resume its work in South Street.

But Monday and Tuesday the road barriers remained in a neat pile, pictured.

The sign apologising for inconvenience remained in place. By Tuesday there were workmen on the pavement by The Woodman but they were digging up and repairing the surface that had sunk after the first phase of work earlier in the year.

A spokesman for Southern Gas Networks said the main work would start today, October 3, but before it could begin preparatory work had to be done.

The spokesman said: “We drill holes and put cameras down to do a final check so we don’t come across something we were not expecting.”
