A BRIDPORT postie is going the extra mile – or 50 – on a special round after surviving cancer.

Tom Pattinson-Smith will be tackling the Rotary Dorset Bike Ride with his four young children in aid of Cancer Research UK.

The 37-year-old will be riding on the 50-mile challenge around Lulworth Cove and Purbeck on Sunday, September 23.

Tom, of Victoria Grove, was diagnosed with peripheral T-cell lymphoma two years ago, It is a type of cancer which affects immune cells known as T-cells and makes them grow out of control.

He has since successfully taken part in mountain bike endurance rides.

Tom said: “Having survived cancer, I wanted to do my bit to raise money for research into cancer.”

There are 20 and 10-mile routes in the countryside and the Jurassic Coast in the Rotary Dorset Bike Ride which takes place on September 23.

The sponsored bike ride, being organised by Wareham Rotary Club, is aiming to raise £10,000 for Cancer Research UK.

Ros Fry, Cancer Research UK’s area volunteer manager for Dorset, said: “We are absolutely delighted that Tom has decided to attempt such a great challenge to raise money for Cancer Research UK.”

“He and his friends are doing lots of preparation and we’re sure they’re going to have an amazing experience. “We can’t thank them enough for all their support and want to wish them all the very best on the day.”

Ros added: “Cancer Research UK has made enormous progress in the fight against cancer and continues to do so.

“However, we have only been able to do this thanks to the dedication and commitment of our volunteers and supporters without whom we would not be able to fund our vital research.”
